Dear Bill:
This is a complaint about the noise and fumes from the
Peninsula Charter Lines Bus which parks every day with its engine
running opposite Margaret Jacks Hall. Indeed it parks in front
of a fire hydrant, but I'm not complaining about that. Normally
it parks 10 minutes, but today (August 6) it parked for approximately
half an hour. The bus driver at first couldn't be found, but when
he returned refused to turn off the engine.
This bus is noisier than any other bus that comes to Stanford and,
since it is Diesel powered, makes people in Margaret Jacks Hall nauseous
when the wind is blowing towards the building.
I have the following suggestions.
1. Make it park somewhere away from the buildings until
just the last minute when it picks up its passengers (commuters
from San Francisco).
2. Make it turn off its engine when parked. The driver
says he keeps the engine running to power the air conditioning to
cool off the bus which has been parked in the sun all day.
\closing
Sincerely,
John McCarthy
